West Indian Manatees: Crystal River, Florida
West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus), are found from the southern United States to the northeast coast of Brazil. Florida's manatees are a subspecies (latirostris) of the West Indian manatee. They are mammals and can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes -- when they do finally surface for air, they can fill their lungs to capacity in the blink of an eye.
